Create and Expand African-American Heritage Assets

Between the underground railroad sites spread across the County, the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, and iconic community events celebrating Black excellence in music, arts, and craft brew, Pittsburgh is a year-round destination for Black cultural experiences and for exploring the rich depth of American Black history. With input from members of the African-American Tourism Advisory Council (see above recommendation), VisitPITTSBURGH should provide financial support and technical resources to partners in order to expand offerings centered on African-American history and culture. This may include an adaptation of the existing Emerging Festivals & Cultural Events grant program and a new grants and technical assistance program for tour operators and asset managers to further develop/expand African American tourism experiences, including tours, exhibitions/galleries, and cultural or historical sites.
