Celebrate Pittsburgh’s Sports Heritage

Sports is part of Pittsburgh’s history, and have been played dating back to the American Civil War. The first professional American football game was also played in the city in 1892. Since then the city has seen great success in baseball, hockey, and American football, and the county been home to multiple sports figures. To this date, both residents and visitors still consider Pittsburgh to be a sports city according to the 2022 VisitPittburgh survey, and the “City of Champions” continues to resonate with some. With three major professional sports franchises (Penguin, Pirates, Steelers) and performing collegiate teams, sports in Pittsburgh goes beyond the game and celebrating it’s history is an opportunity to expand and create new experiences to further connect with residents, visitors, and fans around the world.
